As a home improvement company, we see firsthand the problems caused by rain gutters not being adequately cleaned and maintained.  Many homeowners think debris in a rain gutter causes rain roof runoff to overflow the rain gutter to the ground and don’t see the problem.  There’s much more to it.  A clogged and improperly maintained rain gutter system could damage your roof, soffit, exterior and interior walls, ceilings, and home foundation!

One of the most significant factors in rain gutter neglect is the lack of knowledge on how to clean the system correctly and the fact that rain gutter systems aren’t easy to get to, depending on the roof’s height.  Often, homeowners don’t know they have a problem with their rain gutter system until they start to see the damage inside their homes.  By that time, there could be a host of issues behind the ceiling and walls that the homeowner may not be aware.

So, why are clean and correctly maintained rain gutters important? An adequately maintained rain gutter system manages the water runoff from your roofing system away from your roof and your home foundation.  It protects your roof, soffit, rafters, attic, ceilings, walls, and your home’s foundation and basement.

You should inspect your rain gutter systems every year after all the leaves have fallen from nearby trees for blockages and leaks.  A professional should clean out rain gutters annually or install a leaf guard on the rain gutter system to keep leaves and airborne debris from entering your rain gutters.  Rain gutters should be checked for leakage, sealed, or damaged rain gutter replaced to ensure no water leaks from seams or discharge piping.  Discharge piping should be anchored to the home and extended a few feet away from the home’s foundation to prevent water from seeping into the foundation walls.
